Orange Sunset - Animal Kingdom - Room 2

Free as a Bird!

“Birds in their freedom to fly and stop wherever they like have always been a natural symbol of the freedom of the spiritually awakened human being” - Giriak

For many, the bird is a symbol of freedom. He has the ability to fly freely over all and travel to far away places. This small creature is unconstrained and lightweight, which allows him to disembark in places that are not as easily accessible to all species. Additionally, the bird is made up of many shapes, sizes, and colors - making him one of the most beautiful and unique creatures on the planet.

Historical

"I have always been fascinated by the shapes and sculptural forms of animals, they present a never-ending source of inspiration to me. I try to capture a feeling of their movement and presence in my sculpture. For this I use wire and other materials in a way that suggests drawing in three dimensions. This allows me greater freedom to add changes whenever I want during the construction to keep the feeling fluid and to reflect the diversity of movement and form.

I increasingly use recycled and discarded materials as I enjoy the challenge of transforming something with a past history into something new and exciting." - Barbara Frank

The idea of "recreating past history" in Barbara's artwork is one example of the human's perspective of the animal. She acknowledges here; the longevity of the cow, and through recycled goods - its continuous reliability.

Vigilant

Rich Adams was inspired to draw a picture of this female elk after taking a trip to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone, in 2008.

The elk, like many other animals throughout the kingdom, is very attentive to her surroundings. Realizing her vulnerability in an atmosphere where her kind can easily become preyed upon - this elk quickly lifts her head from the forage to scan her surroundings - characterizing her vigilant elements.

Fragile

The artist, Hetty Baiz, likes to work intuitively on her pieces while utilizing an array of materials. For this particular project she used hundreds of pieces of torn paper (both handmade and hand painted), torn photographs that were taken while on vacation in Asia and Africa, and paint for the background only. This piece was inspired by her love for animals and her concern for the future of our fragile environment.
